So What?..... But What If!
Gender-based approaches to Women’s Safety
A collaborative campaign with One4Growth, Glasglow Girls Club & Thriving Survivors
Kicking off our year-long campaign for Women’s Safety – we welcome Dawn Fyfe, Strategic Development Worker from Wise Women and Amy Rew, Chief Executive Officer of Glasgow Girls Club to discuss:
Equally Safe; Scotland’s Strategy for Preventing and Eradicating Violence Against Women and Girls.
Friday 21st at 11am - Live HERE
The Project will support local authorities to contribute to the Scottish Government’s the 4 priorities under the Equally Safe strategy;
Scottish society embraces equality and mutual respect, and rejects all forms of violence against women and girls.
Women and girls thrive as equal citizens – socially, culturally, economically and politically.
Interventions are early and effective, preventing violence and maximising the safety and wellbeing of women, children and young people.
Men desist from all forms of violence against women and girls, and perpetrators of such violence receive a robust and effective response
These are achieved through the Equally Safe Delivery Plan, which gives Violence Against Women Partnerships the, “responsibility for delivering Equally Safe within their localities. These Partnerships are responsible for bringing together all the key public sector and third sector organisations working to prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls within each local authority area”.
BACKGROUND
Wise Women is a unique, voluntary sector organisation in Glasgow that supports women to improve their personal safety. On International Human Rights Day, 10th December 2021, in partnership with Glasgow Girls Club, Commonplace and Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership, we launched a women’s safety survey for Glasgow, (see below for information on all organisations involved.)
After identifying the Heatmap as an information gathering tool, Wise Women secured the support of Glasgow Violence Against Women’s Partnership to seek an organisation who could develop an App to hold the map and additional information. This would allow women to download the App to input any harassment and / or abuse they experienced in the survey period. Glasgow Girls Club who specialise in developing IT solutions to issues experienced by young women, in particular, developed the App and website that holds all relevant information to the Heatmap and additional support for workers and women.
The survey is in the form of an easy to use heatmap, developed by Commonplace. This offers women the opportunity to inform us of their experiences of harassment and abuse in public spaces. All information collated will be used to inform strategic approaches towards increasing women’s safety in Glasgow.
The survey will be open for contributions from 10th December 2021 until 1st March 2021, with initial findings distributed on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2022.
This Project is a project for change. We are aware of the level of violence and abuse women experience. What is unique about this Project is that the experiences of women will be gathered not only to give an evidence base for decision makers, but to also encourage Local Authorities to include women in the actual decision making, putting women’s safety at the centre of future plans for our cities, towns and villages.
PARTNER ORGANISATIONS
Wise Women address women’s fears and experiences of crime and violence through the provision of Personal Safety and Confidence Building courses and workshops in local Glasgow communities. Our services offer support, information, education, skill sharing, awareness raising and techniques for identifying, avoiding and escaping potentially dangerous situations as well as challenging damaging women-blaming attitudes and building women’s confidence and self-esteem.
Glasgow Girls Club provides innovative programmes and solutions, helping to connect participants at risk of crisis and isolation with empowering opportunities, networks, and outcomes. As a social enterprise, Girls Club also runs a social good digital agency, to help address the digital needs of grassroots community groups and charities. As part of the Increasing Women’s Safety Project, Girls Club have been able to compliment the Commonplace technology by embedding the safety map in a progressive web app that users can download, and quickly access via their home screen. As a grassroots community anchored organisation Glasgow Girls Club has a broad range of community engagement and development expertise that help to build trust and dynamic multi faceted partnerships across a variety of public and third sector settings, helping to support outreach and engagement for the project.
