A Journey to Healing with Thriving Survivors

Navigating through life with the burden of childhood trauma and PTSD can feel isolating, but discovering a community that understands your struggle can change everything. This is the story of a mentor at Thriving Survivors who transformed personal trials into a beacon of hope for others.

The Early Challenges

"For me, the journey started with a lot of childhood trauma which continued into my teenage years. By my 20s, I was desperate to understand what was going on inside my head," the mentor begins. This quest for answers led to numerous sessions with specialists and counsellors, culminating in a diagnosis of PTSD, which later escalated to complex PTSD.

"I felt like a piece of a puzzle, visiting specialist after specialist, each offering a piece of the puzzle, but never enough to help me move forward. I knew what was happening in my mind, but I was stuck with the question: where do I go from here?"

A Turning Point  A chance interaction changed everything. "I was on Universal Credit, and my adviser mentioned a mental health event. I almost didn't go, but something pushed me to attend," they recall.

It was at this event that they encountered Thriving Survivors, a meeting that would pivot their path towards healing.

"I met Vick, a mentor at Thriving Survivors, and also Ashley. Speaking with Vick, I felt understood for the first time. It was refreshing to talk to someone who truly gets it."

The Role of Lived Experience The mentor emphasises the unique support that Thriving Survivors offers, contrasting it with their previous experiences. "It's one thing to learn about mental health from textbooks and another to hear from someone who has actually lived it. While traditional counselling was helpful, it lacked the depth of shared experience that I found with Vick."

A New Direction

The mentorship not only offered support but also a new career path.

"After a few months, the pandemic shifted our interactions, but Thriving Survivors reached out and kept the connection alive. Eventually, I started volunteering and later became a mentor myself."

Impact and Outlook

"Now, I use my past experiences to pave a path for my future—and hopefully for others too," the mentor shares. "If I can help just one person find the light at the end of their tunnel, then everything I've been through will have been worth it."

The journey from trauma to mentorship at Thriving Survivors shows us that while our past shapes us, it does not define us. With the right support and community, transformation is not just possible, but inevitable.

"Today, as I mentor others and see them join our team to help even more people, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. All the chaos of my past now serves a purpose, helping others find their way out of the darkness."

This story not only reflects the power of personal transformation but also highlights the crucial role of organisations like Thriving Survivors in facilitating genuine healing through understanding and shared experiences.
