From Healing to Helping at Thriving Survivors

The journey of a mentor at Thriving Survivors often begins with personal challenges and transforms into a mission to support others. Here's the inspiring story of a mentor who turned her life’s hardships into a source of strength for both herself and the community she serves.

A Challenging Start

"It all began during a particularly difficult time in my life when I was dealing with multiple traumas," the mentor recalls.

Working in childcare and being off sick, she faced uncertainty about her future in the profession.

"I was on sick leave, unsure whether I'd return to childcare or venture into something new. That's when I found Thriving Survivors and enrolled in the 'Discover Me' course."

Growth and Development

The course was a turning point. "I volunteered at the Mansion House in Tollcross with Ashley for about three years," she explains.

During this period, she not only helped set up and run a crèche but also mastered various coping skills while nurturing children.

Transition and Transformation

As circumstances evolved, so did her career path.

"When we moved locations and no longer had the space for a crèche, I decided it was time to seek paid employment."

She transitioned into care work, serving as a carer for three years before a serendipitous reunion with Ashley led her back to Thriving Survivors, this time as a mentor.

Mentoring with Empathy

"Now, my role is a bit different from before, but the core remains the same: working with people and their families," she states.

The mentor supports individuals from various backgrounds, assisting them with different challenges such as trauma, medical issues, and depression.

"We offer support that might include encouraging them to try meditation for better sleep, or simply suggesting a walk in the park for some fresh air."

The Impact of Lived Experience

Her own experiences deeply enrich her mentoring approach.

"Having lived through similar struggles, I understand how they feel, which allows me to offer genuine empathy and practical advice."

She shares her personal coping strategies, like meditation, which have proved beneficial not only for her but also for those she guides.

Seeing Progress

The rewards of her mentoring are vivid and fulfilling.

"It’s incredibly gratifying to see the tangible improvements in those I help. When they come back and tell me that a strategy worked for them, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do."

This mentor's story is a powerful example of how personal adversity can be transformed into an opportunity to make a significant impact on others' lives. At Thriving Survivors, the journey from healing oneself to helping others is not just a possibility—it’s a reality.

"Seeing them move on and improve is what keeps me motivated. It’s about turning the chaos of my past into a catalyst for helping others find their path to recovery."
